DECATUR SISTER CITIES
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to speak Japanese or Germany to be a student ambassador or host family?
A: No. All host families speak English so traveling students are not required to learn the language to be selected. In addition, all of the students that visit Decatur can speak some English so you do not need to speak German or Japanese in order to host a student. Part of the experience is learning to communicate with each other in various ways. You will soon realize that you do not need to speak the same language to understand one another.
Q: How much does it cost to be a student ambassador?
A: Students must pay for their flight which typically runs between $800-1200. Students must also purchase a passport if they do not already have one prior to the trip. All lodging, meals, and activities once they arrive are taken care of by the host family and/or Sister Cities. Students must also provide any additional spending money during their trip. Partial and full scholarships are available to help offset the costs. Applications for scholarships are available on our website.
Q: How many students are selected?
A: Typically 6-12 students are selected to visit each sister city.
Q: How are students selected?
A: All interested applicants must fill out an application form. Once all applications are received students will be notified for interviews. Group and/or individual interviews will be given and students will be chosen by a special selection committee.
Q: What are the requirements to be a student ambassador?
A: Applicants must be a current high school student and live within the Decatur city limits. Student Ambassadors must be responsible, outgoing, and get along well with others. Although hosting is not a requirement, please understand that students whose families have previously hosted will be given priority. If your student is interested in traveling to one of our sister cities, we strongly recommend hosting one of our visiting students.
Q: My child has never traveled alone, should I be concerned about my student traveling overseas?
A: We certainly understand that there are many concerns when students travel overseas. It is mandatory that all of the Decatur students travel together. Our organization provides the students and families with all of the necessary information prior to their departure. Students will meet prior to their departing flight. Once the students arrive at their destination airport, they will be met by members of the Sister Cities who will help them with luggage and will provide transportation to where they will meet their host families. Students will be with their host families or members of Sister Cities at all times
